Young adult is my genre of choice. My bookshelves are packed tight with incredible young characters, captivating (and honestly, quite dark) worlds, and thousands of empowering learning moments.
So, what is Y/A? Young adult stories always have a teenage main character, which leads to teenage issues (school, family, friends, secret worlds, magic, betrayal, politics, the future) and tackle them leaving readers with a sense of hope. Teenagers are a lot of fun to read (and write). They’re funny, they’re smart, they have some intense emotions, and they are relentless in everything that they do.
I’m 25, but it’ll be a long time before I move away from this genre. Which is pretty common for ‘older’ young adults. These are coming-of-age stories and a lot of us are still going through this stage of our lives.
Definitely something that isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but if you want to dive a little deeper into writing this world, here are some resource to help you get started!
